Vivian Rae Everitt

Vivian Rae Everitt, 94, died Feb. 13, 2023, in Keizer, OR.

Born on Oct. 31, 1928, she grew up in Pocatello, ID, but graduated from Boise High School. She earned her associates degree from Boise Junior College, her bachelors degree in journalism from the University of Oregon, and her Masters degree in Education from the University of Idaho.

Education was always important to her. In 1952 she was a founding member of an American Association of University Women (AAUW) chapter in Gooding, ID, and was active in the organization throughout her life, receiving special recognition from the Salem, OR, chapter after 50 years of service.

She married Herb Everitt in 1950 and as a typical wife of the time, she followed and supported him throughout their lives, serving as his social coordinator and sounding board. He died in 2018. During his life, he created the Idaho educational television system, and was based in Pocatello at Idaho State University for many years.

While living there Rae’s lifelong passion for education led her to create the first adult education evening program in that city, which quickly became a huge success.

Later, the couple moved to Oregon, where Rae became public policy chair for AAUW. During that time she and AAUW worked for the Oregon vote-by-mail proposal, which was an aid to senior citizens, as well as others. She testified on behalf of the legislation and organized other testimony and petitions until it became law.

She continued her service into her 90s by registering people to vote, eventually limiting most of her efforts to the assisted living facility where she had moved in her 80s. She felt it was important that every citizen have the opportunity to vote, and that it was their obligation to do so.

She believed in helping people and encouraging their participation in the community. She was always active in community and university organizations. At one time, for example, she served as president of the salem newcomers organization.

Inurnment services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the urn wall of the Meridian Cemetery in Meridian, ID., where she will rest next to her husband, Herb, who died in 2018.
