Roger Vernon Harris was born in Spokane, Washington on January 19, 1939. He died at age 84, at home in Sublimity, Oregon, surrounded by his wife and children, on July 26, 2023. He went to Heaven just in time to have the best view in the house for his first granddaughter's wedding, 2 days later.
Roger was the 4th of 6 boys born to Elizabeth and Earl Harris, and had 2 more brothers an 3 sisters, born to Earl and his first wife. In 1941, during WW2, Roger's family moved to a farm in Hangman Creek (near Spokane). In 1947, the family moved to Potholes (near Moses Lake), then for a brief time to Eltopia. In 1955 they moved to Aumsville, Oregon, where Roger became a Varsity athlete in basketball, football, and baseball at Cascade High School. He was a star on the basketball team, and was once carried off the court on the shoulders of his teammates, and had his photo featured in the local newspaper.
Roger married Susie Marker on February 23, 1963 in Salem, Oregon. Susie was the love of his life. Together they raised 2 sons, and 4 daughters. They started their life together in Salem, moving to Eugene, then Lake Oswego, then Beaverton, then Boring, and finally back to Salem in 1977. They've spent the last four years enjoying the beautiful views in Sublimity. Roger enjoyed a successful career in advertising at Payless Drug Stores, before starting his lengthy career at Ohmart & Calaba Real Estate in Salem, where he eventually took over ownership, retiring in 2006. He was a member of Creekside Golf Club for 30 years, and celebrated his first and only Hole in One there in 2020. Roger's greatest loves were his wife, his children, his grandchildren, golf and Christmas.
Roger is survived by Susie, his wife of 60 years, his sons Hank Harris and Evan Harris, daughters Leah Amsberry, Maria Sylva, Cindi Harris, and Sara Vaughn, sons & daughter in law Lorri Harris, Donna Harris, Kyle Amsberry, Bruce Sylva & Marty Vaughn, his 13 grandchildren Mitchell, Kayla (&Chris), Justin, Samuel, Meghan, Chad, Halle, Harrison, Sandon, Zachary, Porter, Kekoa & Dane, his oldest brother Stan and his youngest brother Randy.
A celebration of Roger's life will be held at Saint Edward's Catholic Church in Keizer, Oregon, Monday, August 14th, 2023 at 1230pm, Rosary at 12pm.
