Roger Arnold

April 18, 1954 — May 12, 2023

Born In Boise Idaho on Easter Sunday 4/18/1954 to Harold and Ellen Arnold. He joined his older sister Nancy and brother Larry. He was then followed by sister Anne, and 17
Foster siblings. Roger’s parents assisted in all of the adoptions, a few of which are known to us. Harvey and Elizabeth Tinno, and Sheila Williams. It was a busy and loving home.

When he was in the 7th grade, his parents moved the family to Albion in Southeast Idaho to open Arnold’s Albion Market (AA Mart). He went to school in Declo for Junior and High School. He was a student director of the band and played several instruments but he was best known as the drummer. He played for the Declo Drill Team across Idaho. He and his Uncle Jim Kell sang in a BarberShop Chorus singing high tenor.

Upon graduation from Declo High School (36 in the Graduating class), he and cousin Dennis Evans went to Columbia Christian College in Portland Oregon. Both Roger and Dennis found their wives while “studying” there.

Roger married Connie Lorraine Schoenborn on July 6th 1974, and were married 47 years. Aaron was born in September of 1976 followed by Caleb in January of 1979.

They moved into a house in Milwaukie followed by Hubbard, and then Molalla. Roger and Connie, with children in tote, helped establish JOY bus ministries at Linwood and Molalla Churches of Christ.

They moved to West Virginia to attend Williamstown Bible College in April of 1979. Roger attended the final 3 years of Williamstown Bible Colleges existence where he earned a Bachelors in Christian Ministries. They all returned back to Molalla in July of 1984.

Roger went back to work for a former boss of his while looking for a youth ministry position in the Portland area. Because there were no openings in youth ministry in the area he worked with the youth in Molalla. He and Connie taught junior worship, ran the JOY bus ministry and preached occasionally. They lived in Molalla until February of 1987, when they moved to Florence Oregon.

Roger had a few secular jobs, and Connie helped run the preschool at the church building. They worked with the youth there and… also the JOY bus.

In October of 1988 he was offered and accepted the opening at Monmouth Church of Christ as the pulpit minister. Connie had attended there as a child through high school. Her family had settled there in 1960. Some of her family still reside there today.

He worked several side jobs during his time there including working for the school district as a noon time supervisor and bus driver. He volunteered with the Fire and Police departments as a Chaplain and in critical incidents was a counselor for 1st responders when needed. He was very involved in the community working with the local baseball league, Panther Club, and the all night senior party after Graduation Day.

His job with Monmouth Church of Christ ended in December of 1995. He and Connie began attending Keizer Church of Christ were became a Deacon, then an Elder where he served for several years.

He stepped down when his health was failing, which opened the door for deep depression. He spent the next several years of his life making decisions unlike anything his former character would have allowed. This culminated in the separation and then divorce from Connie. His health continued to be poor.

The remaining Elders at Keizer worked with him over these years to encourage him and turn him back from the depths of his depression. Connie continued working with him as well. They remained friends to the end.

His last Sunday on earth, he had written and had read an apology to the Church at Keizer, asking for forgiveness for the previous few years.

Roger died on May 12, 2023 of a cardiac event while at his home in south Salem.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, and foster sister Elizabeth. He leaves behind Connie, Caleb, and Aaron, Aaron’s wife Cindy and their two children Nathan and Alison. Nancy Fennell and husband Jim, their two daughters and one son, and 8 grands and 3 great grandchildren. Larry and Deborah Arnold, their two sons, and 6 grandkids. Ann and Paul Reasch and their two kids, 6 grandkids. Harvey Tinno and 1 son and 5 grandkids. Sheila and Kent Williams and 3 kids and their spouses.
